What’s the Texas LTC Shooting Test?

If you’re getting your License to Carry, you’ll eventually face the Texas LTC shooting test—and it’s not as daunting as you may think. It’s meant to check basic handgun safety and marksmanship, rather than delve into advanced tactics.

At Guardians’ Arms, we guide each student on what to expect before they step onto the range. We offer Basic Handgun, Carrying Concealed Weapons, and Custom Classes to help you succeed.

LTC Shooting Test Requirements (Texas DPS)

The test consists of 50 rounds, shot at three distances:

  • 3 yards (20 rounds)
  • 7 yards (20 rounds)
  • 15 yards (10 rounds)

You’ll shoot from a standing position with no time limit, and you must score at least 175 out of 250 points (70%) to pass.

Pro tip: You don’t have to be perfect—just safe, consistent, and accurate enough to prove you can responsibly carry a handgun.

How to Prepare for the Texas LTC Shooting Test

Purpose driven practice is a great way to build confidence before the LTC proficiency test! Here’s how:

  • Take part in a Basic Handgun class to strengthen your grip, stance, and fundamentals!
  • Practice with your personal carry firearm (not just a range rental)
  • Wrok on drawing, aiming, and shooting from the ready position!
  • It’s important to understand how to safely reload and clear malfunctions.

At Guardians’ Arms, we offer private and group instruction designed to suit your comfort level, skill level, and goals. Our Basic Handgun and Custom Firearms Classes are wonderful options to assist you in getting ready for the shooting portion.

Range Fees and Paperwork
